What Is Bipolar Disorder? Bipolar disorder and also known as manic-depressive disorder or manic depression is a form of mental illness. A person affected by bipolar disorder has had at least one manic episode in his or her life. A manic episode is a period of abnormally elevated mood swings and high energy, accompanied by abnormal behavior that disrupts life. Most people with bipolar disorder also suffer from episodes of depression. Often, there is a pattern between mania and depression. This is where the term manic depression comes from. In between episodes of mania and depression, many people with bipolar disorder can live normal lives. What Is Bipolar Disorder? Bipolar disorder is a form of mental illness. Often in bipolar disorder, the up moods never reach full-blown mania. The less-intense elevated moods in bipolar disorder are called hypomania episodes. A person affected by bipolar disorder has had at least one hypomania episode in his or her life. Most people with bipolar disorder suffer more often from episodes of depression. In between episodes of hypomania and depression, many people with bipolar disorder live normal lives.
